Hypnobirthing Classes in Suffolk

Hypnobirthing teaches deep relaxation techniques for use during childbirth. Allowing a woman to work with her body, making birth a positive experience.

What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing works with a mothers natural ability to give birth without the need for severe discomfort, challenging the widespread belief that severe pain is a normal part of birth.
Hypnobirthing works by encouraging a woman to relax. During labour your body is full of hormones, working hard. When you are tense or afraid all the bodies effort goes into building up adrenaline and other hormones that are not helpful. When you are relaxed during labour, the hormones in your body work better and you are more likely to have a calm and comfortable birth. Labour can also be shorter.
Hypnobirthing also gives you the tools to stay in control of your own experience, and to work together with your partner as you welcome your new baby into the world.

The History of Hypnobirthing.

Hypnobirthing is based on the work of Dr Grantly Dick-Read, an English physician, whose work 50 years ago, provided the foundations of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT).
Dr Dick-Read concluded that fear and tension was responsible for 95 per cent of labour pain, which could be eliminated through relaxation techniques.
More recently the work of Michelle Leclaire O'Neill and Marie Mongan in the US in developing techniques for relaxation, and Michel Odent in France and the UK with his work on home birth and birthing pools, have encouraged thousands of women to take control of their birth experience.

“Many people expect Hypnobirthing to be a vague and rather hippyish thing, mostly due to the name. However, it is completely based on a sound understanding of the body of a woman, and the mental and physical processes she goes through in birth. It is recognised and recommended by many midwives.”

A Personal Experience.

Little Owl Hypnobirthing was set up by Alice Lucas after her own positive experience of giving birth using the technique.

“I really wanted the birth of my baby to be as positive as possible, I wanted to be in control of my experience and I wanted to make the right decisions for us. Often childbirth is seen as something you just 'get through'. I wanted to see if it could be better than that.

My experience of the birth of our daughter was amazing. I felt that I could cope with all the sensations of labour. It an was intense experience, but I always felt in control.

Hypnobirthing provided us with all the information we needed to make the right choices about the birth we wanted, the techniques for a calm and natural labour, and the best start for a new life together.

I want to share these techniques with as many women as possible, to enable them to have the same experience that I had.”

The Word is Spreading

Many more women are learning the techniques of Hypnobirthing, and using them to great effect. Changing their view of pregnancy and birth, and actively shaping their own experience.
Hypnobirthing has received a real boost in recent years, helped by some high profile women. Most notably, the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, who reportedly used the technique during the birth of Prince George.

Alice trained to teach Hypnobirthing on the only Royal College of Midwives accredited course in the UK. She is a member of the Hypnobirthing Association.
Little Owl Hypnobirthing offer one to one classes, taught in the comfort of your own home. Alice is based in Halesworth, but teaches across Suffolk and parts of Norfolk.
